English Riviera’s avant-garde approach to trees
This tree planting project in Torquay, United Kingdom, is now maturing and displaying the real tangible benefits of providing sufficient soil volume for a tree at planting stage.
Torbay Council’s forward thinking approach to this project meant that the long term needs of the tree were considered and accounted for early on in the design process. The tree pit construction had to withstand adjacent highway loadings and provide five cubic meters of quality uncompacted soil for the tree’s rooting requirements.
Just like Citygreen®, partner company Greenleaf UK has decades of experience working with landscape architects, civil engineers, consulting arborists and other professions involved in this green space.
Structural soil cells were utilised as they provide the combination of maximum soil volume together with satisfying the engineering demands of the paved surface.
Today the results are clearly visible 20 years later as the tree has established exceptionally well in the soil cell system and is displaying a vibrant, shady canopy – a real asset to the City of Torbay.
