A CIVIC SPACE BUILT FOR THE FUTURE

Project Overview

In 2024, the City of Spruce Grove set out to transform one of its most beloved community spaces, Central Park. Not just through surface upgrades, but by rethinking how civic places support comfort, connection, and long-term climate resilience.

The result is a revitalized park that blends inclusive recreation with deep-rooted sustainability. From shade trees supported by Stratavault engineered soil trenches to universally accessible trails and event-ready infrastructure, this project reflects a new era of civic space design where people, pavement, and nature work together seamlessly.

The Central Park revitalization is part of Spruce Grove’s City Centre Area Redevelopment Plan (CCARP). This broader initiative has already modernized McLeod Avenue and Main Street with upgraded underground services, widened sidewalks, event power, and more than 100 newly planted street trees in Stratavault soil cells. With Central Park reimagined, the downtown core now offers a continuous civic environment designed for both day-to-day life and future adaptability.

Environmental Leadership and Urban Forest Alignment

Spruce Grove’s revitalization of Central Park isn’t just about public space. It’s an extension of the city’s environmental goals - identifying tree canopy expansion, root health, and community stewardship as civic priorities. Their 2022–2025 Strategic Plan reaffirmed these values, calling for greener infrastructure, improved natural areas, and stronger sustainability integration across departments. The engineered soil volume beneath hardscapes, using passive irrigation, and specifying canopy-performing elm trees, translates these plans into action.

The project also reflects trends seen in nearby Edmonton, whose “Greener Edmonton” plan and Urban Forest Asset Strategy echo similar values: integrating trees as infrastructure, designing for long-term growth, and supporting climate resilience with natural systems.

Designing Shade and Resilience from the Roots Up

Shade was a core objective. With hot summers, paved surfaces, and busy pedestrian traffic, the need for durable, natural cooling was clear. American elm trees were selected for their resilience and canopy potential, and much larger tree grates were specified to accommodate long- term growth. But the real innovation was buried below, beneath the promenades and pathways. central park img 10 Citygreen
To make these trees viable, Spruce Grove adopted Citygreen’s Stratavault™ Generation 6 soil cell system - a modular, structural matrix that allows uncompacted, high quality soil to sit beneath hardscape while still supporting heavy surface loads. Unlike isolated tree pits, Stratavault allows for continuous trenches, giving roots more space in uncompacted, aerated soil, to thrive.

Overcoming Site Constraints

Like many urban parks, Central Park, Spruce Grove, is hemmed in by utilities: storm drains, power and telecom corridors, event electrical, and water lines. ISL Engineering led initial soil volume assessments, but as conditions changed during excavation, the Citygreen DESIGN Services team worked with the contractor to adapt layouts using a set of trench configurations which prescribed for modules to be selectively removed or rerouted to protect utilities while maintaining

the necessary soil volume. These on-site adaptations can be uniquely configured with the Stratavault system, avoiding delays.

The Stratavault 400 mm raised footplates allowed services to pass beneath, while the snap-together assembly simplified installation. Inside each trench,
dual Snorkil inlets provided passive irrigation and aeration, and 100mm perforated PVC pipes directed excess water to the soil vaults - ensuring the trees had moisture without being oversaturated, even in Spruce Grove’s short growing season.

A Civic Model for Climate and Community

On August 31, 2025, the Reimagined Central Park officially opened to thousands of locals with a grand community celebration: BMX and skateboard demos, local food trucks, live music, family activities, and a movie under the stars.

The park is expected to be a busy hub of activity boasting some of the finest skate facilities in the region.

It is also a model for how cities can design civic spaces that meet today’s needs while preparing for tomorrow’s challenges. The trees need time to grow however thanks to the Stratavault engineered soil system and thoughtful stormwater design, they will flourish quickly to deliver a space that will grow, not just in shade, but in civic value.

“Great customer service, quick response times and a very in depth QA system with constant support.”

- Laura Wiesenekker, Project Engineer, Densford Civil -

“Citygreen is a very professional  business, and I found everything was great in terms of deliveries, product supply and information. It was all forthcoming and helped us to complete the project.”

- Keith Burns, Architect/Designer, Keith Burns Architect -

“Citygreen offered training and invaluable technical assistance during the works.”

- James Callan, Estimating Manager, Complex Co Pty Ltd -

“Our experience, in working with a Citygreen Design Studio was second to none. We found responses from the design studio to be very timely, and technically thorough. We went backwards and forwards a number of times, looking at different iterations of the design and, nothing was too much trouble to examine and explore different possibilities. I would highly recommend the Citygreen Design Studio to any future client considering using your services.”

- Sandra Smith, Principal Landscape Architect, City Of Monash -

“We are big on compliance on all projects, and the fact that their SmartCertify cloud platform covers all bases, and supports their 20 year warranties, is critical – especially that these pits are being installed under roadways and footpaths.”

- Johny Purkaystha, Civil Program Engineer, Central Coast Council -

"I reviewed all the previous projects that we have installed in the past couple years using your product and I can happily report back that we have 0% mortality in the soil cells, which is incredible!"

- Brendan Wilton, CEO, Trim Landscaping, Bedford, Canada -
