Monitor tree health and environmental changes in real time

In urban areas, tree growth is largely constrained by high mortality rates of young and small trees. In the initial years after planting, trees are more susceptible to stress and injury (Roman, Battles & McBribe, 2013).

Citygreen has developed Smart Sensors, to monitor green infrastructure systems in a range of urban environments. Made from 100% recycled materials, the loT devices have been specifically designed to improve the growth rate and sustainability of urban-forests.

“To address this constraint, and attain larger, healthier trees more quickly, real-time monitoring of urban tree populations is required.”

Soil Health Sensor

Citygreen’s Soil Health Sensor provides information across the following soil health conditions:

  • Moisture
  • Light
  • PH
  • Salinity
  • Temperature

Providing a range of insights into soil health, 24 hours a day, will increase the overall health of the tree, and thereby reduce the rate of young tree mortality. The robust, simple design, with five years battery life, allows you to immediately see the effect of fertilization and other treatments on the soil. The device can easily be moved from one location to the next, to gather a broad soil analysis of any given area.

Through providing real-time information, the sensor allows for trigger responses, for example during a dry-spell, the device will send an alert that a tree is suffering from heat stress, and that water is urgently required. Receiving this data allows for swift, informed action to be taken, to allow the tree to respond and recover accordingly.

The sensors can also be used for long-term tree monitoring, to see how resilient certain trees were, and why some trees overtime performed better than others. This knowledge can then be used to inform future urban tree planting initiatives.

The development team at Citygreen have created a dedicated phone application and dashboard for the system, that operates on Apple/Android operating systems.

Tree Growth Sensor

Alongside data provided using the Soil Health Sensor, Citygreen also can provide information on the growth rate of any given tree, through the use of our Tree Growth Sensor.

Known as a dendrometer, the device is used for high-precision and continuous measurement of stem diameter changes. This device is suitable for long-term application in outdoor conditions, withstanding extreme environmental conditions, including high wind conditions, and extreme heatwaves.

Used in conjunction with the Soil Health Sensor, this Tree Growth Sensor will provide real-time information about which trees are growing best, and in which location.

“Great customer service, quick response times and a very in depth QA system with constant support.”

- Laura Wiesenekker, Project Engineer, Densford Civil -

“Citygreen is a very professional  business, and I found everything was great in terms of deliveries, product supply and information. It was all forthcoming and helped us to complete the project.”

- Keith Burns, Architect/Designer, Keith Burns Architect -

“Citygreen offered training and invaluable technical assistance during the works.”

- James Callan, Estimating Manager, Complex Co Pty Ltd -

“Our experience, in working with a Citygreen Design Studio was second to none. We found responses from the design studio to be very timely, and technically thorough. We went backwards and forwards a number of times, looking at different iterations of the design and, nothing was too much trouble to examine and explore different possibilities. I would highly recommend the Citygreen Design Studio to any future client considering using your services.”

- Sandra Smith, Principal Landscape Architect, City Of Monash -

“We are big on compliance on all projects, and the fact that their SmartCertify cloud platform covers all bases, and supports their 20 year warranties, is critical – especially that these pits are being installed under roadways and footpaths.”

- Johny Purkaystha, Civil Program Engineer, Central Coast Council -

"I reviewed all the previous projects that we have installed in the past couple years using your product and I can happily report back that we have 0% mortality in the soil cells, which is incredible!"

- Brendan Wilton, CEO, Trim Landscaping, Bedford, Canada -
