Urbangrove® is a new collection of tree planter systems. Supported by smart tech, now you can grow healthy trees anywhere in the city

For over three decades, Citygreen have been innovating engineered tree pit solutions to grow healthy, climate resilient trees in hardscape urban spaces.

In places where tree pits are not a viable option, the Urbangrove collection of tree planter systems provides an effective, above ground solution.

With a bespoke approach to size, shape and colour to cater to your desired aesthetics and brand, a core range is available in two styles and four organic shades.

ENGINEERED FOR PERFORMANCE

Urbangrove tree planter systems are engineered ecosystems designed in consultation with soil scientists and arborists to optimise healthy tree canopy growth in above ground contexts. Not only do trees have a greater chance of longevity using the Urbangrove planter system, they also deliver a range of practical benefits, including hostile vehicle protection (HVP).

Functional Benefits

  • Hostile vehicle protection: HVP has become an
important consideration in urban planning and
design for busy public spaces, to create safe
zones and minimize the risk of hostile-vehicle
incidents. Urbangrove planter systems offer an
aesthetic, nature-based barrier to busy public
    spaces.
  • Installation convenience: The ideal alternative to
tree-pit excavation, allowing tree canopy to grow
    without disturbing existing infrastructure.
  • Healthier trees: Treebit moisture sensors ensure
trees are given optimal water volumes at the
right time, supporting the success of the trees in
    a container planting.
  • Grow trees, anywhere: Ideal for street markets,
malls, plazas, boulevards, bus stops, memorials
& monuments, green roofs, entrances to
    government buildings, train and subway
stations, critical infrastructure and busy public
spaces like shopping centres, airports and
    stadiums.
  • Portable: Heavy and unable to be moved
manually, the planter base is compatible with
forklift removal, making them ideal for seasonal
    event placement.

BIOPHILIC DESIGN FOR PUBLIC SPACES

Urbangrove tree planter systems support biophilic design and the 30-30-300 urban planning rule, enabling trees to be grown in dense urban spaces where traditional tree planting would not otherwise be possible. These systems preserve existing infrastructure while providing the aesthetic and cooling benefits of trees quickly and cost-effectively.

Aesthetic Benefits

  • Visual appeal: The natural beauty, greenery &
biodiversity of the tree planter systems will
enhance the appeal of any grey, hardscaped
    space.
  • Creating place: Incorporating trees into public
    hardscape design supports biophilic design
    principles, fostering well-being, connection with
nature and creating a sense of place for the
    community.

Environmental Benefits

  • Improved air quality: Trees are more effective
than shrubs or standard potted plants at filtering
pollutants from the air, including dust, soot, and
    carbon dioxide.
  • Urban cooling: The shade produced by the trees
will contribute to canopy cover and reduce the
UHI effect by cooling surrounding areas and
    lowering ambient temperatures.
  • Biodiversity: Trees can provide habitat for birds,
insects, and other wildlife, enhancing urban
    biodiversity.

URBANGROVE PLANTER FEATURES

More than just large containers for above ground tree planting, Urbangrove planter systems include:

  • Insulated wall panels to protect roots from heat
    stress
  • Anti-vandalism water inlet for deep root irrigation
  • Overflow pipe to avoid water logging
  • Soil-less planting media to supercharge
oxygenation, passive irrigation and vertical wicking
  • IoT smart sensors for real time soil moisture
    monitoring.

To ensure the success of the trees, a species selection, care and maintenance support plan can be customized as required.

Urbangrove Planters are a climate positive solution for offsetting UHI and delivering shade in locations where pavement can’t be disturbed. They are also effective for hostile vehicle protection and can be relocated as needed using a forklift.

SIZING IT UP

The Urbangrove planter systems are bigger than most. Our standard box planter is 1025mm high. For bespoke designs, we recommend a minimum height of 1000mm to provide acceptable planting media volume to support healthy tree growth.
